Nicola Tassie

Nicola Tassie originally studied painting at Central School of Art and Design (1980 – 83) then specialised in ceramics at Islington Institute (1985 – 88).

The gallery currently has two beautiful porcelain bowls available by Nicola Tassie.  Shown here, these are porcelain with iron oxide inlay lines, which form an intricate web of lines across the surface.  They can stand alone or look very satisfying placed in connection with each other so the lines link and extend across both vessels, uniting them into one composition.  The large piece is £250, the medium piece £200.  Please contact Evie at the gallery for further details.

As a ceramicist Nicola Tassie’s work focuses on the conceptual and material possibilities of domestic forms. She follows the studio pottery tradition to produce small batch editions of domestic ware – wide bottomed jugs, bowls, faceted mugs, bottles, – using a wide variety of clay bodies, surface marks and ash glazes to explore surface, texture and form. The domestic wares also form the basis of more conceptual works, which display functional, functionally ambiguous, and overtly sculptural works together in larger scale installations and ‘still life’ sets.

I switch between working in earthenware and stoneware and enjoy the variety of clays. I play with the texture of the surface using the simple lines either incised into the soft clay body or scored through the glaze or sgraffitoed through grey slip.

Nicola is a founder member of Standpoint Studios, London.  Her work is shown at Contemporary Ceramics, London, The New Craftsman, London, Wills Lane Gallery in St. Ives and Calvin Klein, New York.  She also has an ongoing collaboration with the designer Margaret Howell, showing in London, Tokyo and Paris.
